there isn't anything new or shocking in the book just how to take out a high calorie ingredient and add a low one in ... such as make cauliflower 'bread' for grilled cheese or replace chicken wings with cauliflower for wing night and make a tuna sandwich with just using a can of light tuna with an avocado
use whole grain bread under 50 calories
hide from pork find turkey
turkey bacon is your friend
... I guess I was looking for something to really just make me pay attention.

lolwut? Some of the 'before' calorie counts are not realistic. It seems like she's taken the most caloric version she can find for the comparison in order to make her versions look great. Others she's only cutting 20-40 calories, which I don't really see the point of. I'm also a bit skeptical of her portion sizes. She'll show a huge piece of pie in her before shot and then a tiny cup for her 'improved' shot. Of course that's going to be less calories? Some of these also just sound/look completel...more

This is a very good book. I loved the recipes in it. There are so many regular recipes in there that has been tweaked to be more healthier. So you can still love the foods you like but with a slight tweak you can make them better for you.
The items in there that are rated 'good for us because' is simply laid out.
I especially loved the apple pie but the pastry was made with oats, yes, with oats. Have I tried it? You bet I have. On an healthy eating plan to loose weight I miss my studgy puds, so th...more

This is a pretty standard diet cookbook of the sort that I remember from when I was growing up in the 1970's and 80's. In it, you'll find diet versions of standard American foods. The recipes are not paleo, gluten free, plant-based, all natural, or any other modern diet that's embraced for health reasons. These are just low calorie versions of junky American classics.
If you want to cook diet versions of foods like pancakes, eggs benedict, chicken wings and ho-hos, this will probably fit the bill...more

I did not find out anything new that my family and I are already using. I am sure it can be useful for some people but if you have already changed your food choices from red meat to turkey or chicken, or flour to gluten free you are already doing what most of the ideas are in this book. Sorry it was not for me. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 3 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

I’ve been a fan of Joy Bauer for years from seeing her on the Today show and was excited to see this book was available for review from NetGalley.
Meal planning for myself and my young adult son can sometimes be challenging since he’s not the biggest fan of “healthy” food. He is however, a big fan of junk food so turning “Junk Food to Joy Food” seemed like just the ticket to finding recipes we’d both enjoy.

This is a rather interesting cookbook: the premise is to take the junky food we like (things like pop tarts, cheez its, potato salad though no brand names are used) and with a few simple changes, create healthier alternatives. Author Bauer wisely avoids altering them too much - we're not talking perfectly healthy here. But this is a case of small changes making a decided difference over time. The book breaks down as follo...more

I thought I'd mix things up and review a cookbook today. I've been trying to eat healthier and it seems that all of the delicious stuff is unhealthy. So when I saw the premise of this book I knew I had to request it. From Junk Food to Joy Food is exactly how it sounds, we take the junk food that is high in calories we all know and love and find ways to reduce that calorie count while staying delicious! I'll admit I was a bit skeptical at first and so was my boyfriend but we tried a few recipes a...more

I love this cookbook! The author took some of my favorite foods and made them healthier. I have a Kindle copy that I was fortunate enough to review through Netgalley, but I really want to buy a hardcover copy because I don't like cooking with the kindle.

Well, i thought this book was pretty good. The recipes are quite simple and suggest the alternatives to full of fat and high calorie nasties that we all love. I'd say I liked the layout of this book, even though some of the reviewers were not too keen on it. Basically, all of the alternatives looked much better, which brings us to the fact that the all the photos are really nice, bright and appetizing.

As far as a cookbook, this is a good book. The photos are appealing and plentiful, the ingredient lists are usually small and full of easily accessible items, and the recipes are easy to follow. The layout with the junk food on the left with details of why it's junk with the alternative on the right is like a magazine and thus will feel familiar.
However, I found the premise a bit flawed. Joy food is based on cutting down calories but that doesn't make it healthy. Sure, relatively, it is but the...more

This book is fantastic! I’ve only tried out a couple of the recipes so far, but I love the concept: Losing weight, eating healthy foods, but not missing out on some of life’s finest treats – this book is a treasure!
Of course, replacing high-calorie, low-quality ingredients with low-calorie, high-quality foods in your daily cooking is not a new concept, but I love the way this book parallels the unhealthy, high-calorie dishes Americans may be used to cooking (including their calorie count) with...more

I loved this book. It has practical commonsense 'copies' of favorite dishes that really pare down the calories. Many of the substitutes are well known, using lower fat versions, Greek yogurt, egg whites, ground chicken or turkey, and others. The recipes are easy to made and most sound yummy. The ones I tried were very good (grilled chicken parmesan, make your own strawberry cream cheese among them). I don't think that I am quite ready to try kale but the kale chip recipe sounds promising. The sn...more

This was an interesting look at some of the foods that we love to eat but are incredibly calorie heavy. This book introduces recipes to lighten those calorie heavy favorites into something we can feel good about eating. I enjoyed the side by side comparisons which is great to see how many calories are in the junk food versus the new version but there isn't a break down in the ingredients that get you to those huge calorie numbers. Overall a great book of alternatives to food favorites.

This cookbook was ok. Some of the recipes were creative and had a different approach to making comfort foods that we normally eat but others not so much. Turkey bacon instead of pig bacon? Turkey bacon has much more sodium in it so I hardly see why that is better. Calorie content isn't everything. Crazy for puzzles
I gave this book a 4 because my Fire Kindle froze and had to be rebooted 5 times. That said. I enjoyed this book because it contained a complete nutritional section with each recipe. A lot of so called 'healthy' cookbooks leave this out. Also liked suggestions for losing weight by cutting out more calorie rich dishes and how many pounds you could lose in a year by doing this. I would recommend this book

I really enjoyed this cookbook and I think it's going to be a big hit! The author takes everyday foods and tweaks them to be a healthier version of the original. Think using cauliflower and avocados. My son and I made the cheese crackers and ate them all while we watched a movie, they were very addicting. My favorite was the decadent desserts section! I highly recommend this delicious cook book!
